Talk with Daniel Thomas Faller: Tips to taking good photographs
August 10, 2023
Blue Down Arrow
As the summer gradually fade away, the arrival of autumn brings a sense of nostalgia and anticipation. As we bid farewell to what seemed to be the hottest summer we had ever experienced, it's time to embrace the crisp air and the earthy aroma that fills the surroundings.
During the fall season, it seems like it is a must to go somewhere to enjoy the beautiful scenery with your friends, family and loved ones. Also, capturing the beautiful moments of the autumn colors, reds, oranges, and yellows, the blue sky, and good people, it would be hard not to take pictures.

But taking good pictures isn't that easy. As there is nothing better than taking a picture to remember and cherish a happy moment, taking a picture that is good enough to be remembered for a long time would be important. With that said, the ECCK met with Daniel Thomas Faller, to talk about how to take good photos that will help pleasant moments last long in memories.
Your love for photography and travel…could you tell us more about that? How did it start?
It is a long story. Since I was young, I have got to travel to different places due to work; To Europe – Switzerland, England, Norway and many more. I would have to say my personal favorites were England and Norway.
What I have realized in doing so is that hot spots, go-to places that are well-known to many tourists or photographers are not what interest me. Finding hidden gems by traveling to different places, capturing the lives of people, nature, etc. is what it does. Going on a journey and capturing what’s unknown and unseen inspires me. For me, travel is what makes this possible.

What do you think of importantly when it comes to taking photographs?
Interacting with your subject, paying close attention to attributes and stories of what’s behind the lens. To me, when it comes to taking photographs, technology and tools are not very important.
Any special theme, place, or subject you enjoy taking photographs of?
I like to capture natural landscapes and people without embellishment. It's also good to take pictures of places that are well known to people, or special landscapes. However, I like to talk to people in their natural state, capturing their personality, the way they smile when they are relaxed, tone of voice, etc.

If you were to give some tips to a non-professional who take photos using a smartphone, what would they be? How can one takes great photos using non-professional gear?
Try to see the big picture. Rather than focusing on one thing, it would be important to look around and see the whole picture. One of the best ways to take good photos is to capture the interaction of the object one wishes to shoot with the surrounding background, people, etc. It is important to capture the overall harmony.
Let's take Gwangjang Market as an example, which is popular with many foreign tourists because it allows them to experience traditional Korean market culture. Imagine visiting the Gwangjang Market and taking pictures. It would be vital to complete a good photo by looking around the overall background, such as the expressions of those who visited the market with their families, the merchants, and various items sold at shops, and capturing their stories. That is how you take great photos without having professional gear.
