From October to December, the Chamber actively involved in facilitating dialogues with the Korean and European governments. The highlights include holding a press conference for ECCK 2020 White Paper, breakfast meeting with former UN Secritariat General Ban Ki-moon and more.

In the morning of October 13, ECCK and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) hosted a breakfast meeting with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, 8th UN Secretary-General and Chairman of GGGI, at Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. The participants were able to attend the meeting both physically and virtually.
During his speech, Chairman Ban discussed future concerns including climate change, environmental degradation and COVID-19. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Chairman Ban and our valued members for their participation.

ECCK held a virtual press conference on November 10 for the publication of the ECCK white paper for 2020, which contains the difficulties and suggestions of European companies regarding the Korean business environment.
ECCK explained the economic challenges and opportunities faced by the European companies in Korea due to the COVID-19 outbreak and discussed the regulatory and structural challenges still remaining in the Korean market. It announced 145 recommendations and regulatory issues across 20 industries, including healthcare, automotive, environment, chemical, food, etc. included in the white paper.
The press conference was attended by Dirk Lukat, ECCK Chairperson and CEO of Schenker Korea, Christoph Heider, ECCK President, H.E. Maria Castillo-Fernandez, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea, as well as chairpersons of ECCK industry committees including Julien Samson, ECCK Healthcare Committee Chairperson and VP & General Manager of GSK Korea, Karsten Kuehme, ECCK Food Committee Chairperson and CEO of Nestlé Korea, Andrew Kim, ECCK Passenger Vehicles Committee Chairperson and Director of External Affairs of Mercedes-Benz Korea, to discuss the position of the European companies in Korea.

On October 7, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) held its annual policy briefing roundtable meeting with the representatives of foreign chambers and companies in Korea. The meeting was attended by ECCK Vice Chairperson Hyun-Nam Park and ECCK President Christoph Heider and discussed the status of anti-corruption policies and system improvement such as rationalization of unnecessary regulations. Also, the heads of foreign business groups shared their opinions on difficulties in running business in Korea.

While the ECCK Charity Race has been successfully completed in Busan on November 6, the official donation period was ended on November 13.
During this charity campaign period, many companies and individuals including ECCK Chairperson Dirk Lukat, ECCK President Christoph Heider, CEO of Safran Korea Bruno Faligot, and Hanwha Total Petrochemical delivered donations, giving a helping hand to neighbors in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Renault Samsung Motors donated Renault Twizy vehicles to two donee organizations.
We would like to thank all who participated the charity campaign of this time. ECCK will continue to pay attention to and strive to increase corporate social responsibility and to realize social values.

The United States Presidential election was held on November 3. In light of the interconnectivity of world markets, the outcome of this election will have implications around the world. On November 11, one week after the election, ECCK organized a seminar to explain the results and have expert speakers assess the possible impact on Korea.
In order to set the stage for our remarkable panel, Mr. James Fatheree, Executive Director of GR Korea, analyzed the election results as well as other pertinent developments since the election. A panel consisting of NA member Youn Kun Young of the Democratic Party, NA member Kim Byung Wook of the People’s Power Party and Dr. Yoon Yeo-joon, Head of the Europe and Americas Team at the Korean Institute for International Economic Policy, and led by Dr. Jiyoon Kim addressed the impact on trade in the Korean economy, cooperation with the Asia region as well as the Korean Green Deal.

The Global Alternative Investment Insights (GAII 2020), jointly held by the ECCK and Maekyung Media Group on November 18, finished a great success. This year, GAII 2020 was joined by over 250 leading persons in the field of alternative investment both physically and virtually. On November 5, Roundtable with the European Business Community in Korea was held with MOTIE Deputy Minister Na Seung-Sik and Foreign Investment Ombudsman Kim Sung Jin at Invest Korea Plaza (KOTRA).
ECCK Chairperson Dirk Lukat participated and presented pressing topics such as recommendation that the foreign residents in Korea to be exempt from the submission of medical certificate when entering the country and suggestion that the corporate Power Purchase Agreement to be allowed without price control or other conditions. In his remarks, he mentioned that through trust and active communication, the European businesses and Korean government will work closely together and can find good solutions for existing and future problems.

On October 30, the ECCK Busan Chapter and the Ulsan Metropolitan Government has successfully hosted the Ulsan Investors’ Luncheon at Millennium Hilton Seoul.
Ulsan city has been proactive in aligning its business projects to the Korean new deal notably in the green new deal released by the local government in July 2020. Therefore, the event was in high interest by not only European investment companies but also European embassies alongside diverse organizations based in Korea.
