ECCK Hosts Live Webinar with the Brussels Effect Author Anu Bradford
October 15, 2020
On October 15, ECCK organized a webinar with Prof. Anu Bradford on the so-called ‘Brussels Effect’, the European Union’s global leading role through its unilateral ability to regulate.
During the webinar Prof. Bradford detailed the Brussels Effect, explained why Washington or Beijing do not possess the same power and explained why certain skepticism about the EU’s power does not hold true. Prof. Bradford, a Henry L. Moses Professor of Law and International Organization at Columbia Law School, is a leading scholar on the EU’s regulatory power and a sought-after commentator on the European Union and Brexit. Prof. Bradford coined the term the Brussels Effect to describe the European Union’s outsize influence on global markets and wrote the book “The Brussels Effect: How the European Union Rules the World”.

Cities in Korea can play a pivotal role in creating an enabling environment through regulations and incentives, but the private sector needs to collaborate and explore the cross-sectoral synergies required to achieve a circular model.
Addressing the circular economy in cities requires the design and implementation of transformative activities where different sectors such as water, energy and waste are integrated into systemic roadmaps. A collective understanding of societal problems is essential to progress towards combined system assessments and co-design processes for a portfolio of transformative products and services for facing systemic obstructions and institutional gaps.
On October13, the ECCK Energy and Environment Working Group hosted a webinar on Circular Economy in Cities. Mr. Peter Vangsboand and Ms. Saehee Jeong from the Innovation Centre Denmark at the Danish Embassy shared knowledge and discussed in a Korean context how to developing good practices for achieving more and better dialogue between systemic actors to establish a collaborative multi-stakeholder arena in the utilities, energy and climate adaption sector starting with a demand-led approach, working with Korean city authorities, regional bodies, Korean governments and industry leaders committed to transitioning to the circular economy.
